In short: A last-minute Halloween costume works best when you combine one strong fandom piece with whatever is already in your wardrobe. A robe, a cloak, a wand or a scarf is enough for everyone to know straight away who you are. Here are seven ideas from Hogwarts to Nevermore, plus snacks and games for the evening.

It is 31 October, the party is tonight and so far your costume only exists as a vague idea. Welcome to the club. The good news: you do not need three weeks at the sewing machine for a really good fandom costume. You need one piece that makes the character recognisable, and the nerve to simply claim the rest.

For most of the ideas here you already have half of it at home: black trousers, a white blouse, boots, a dress in the right colour. The rest is here with us in our Spooky Merch and across every fandom.

Last-minute Halloween costume from Hogwarts: Slytherin and Hufflepuff

The classic among quick costumes is and remains the Hogwarts school uniform. White shirt, dark jumper or skirt, the robe on top and everyone gets it.

1. Slytherin with style. The Slytherin Robe turns any black outfit into a Slytherin uniform straight from the dungeons. Add the Slytherin Tie and the Draco Malfoy Wand. Hair slicked back, slightly bored look, done. You are allowed to say “Wait till my father hears about this” all evening.

2. Hufflepuff with heart. If you would rather be friendly than nasty, go for the Hufflepuff Robe. With the Newt Scamander Wand it even becomes a deep-lore costume, because Newt was a Hufflepuff at Hogwarts. Add a suitcase from the basement and you are Newt Scamander, who accidentally brought a few fantastic beasts to the party.

And for everyone who would rather teach than learn: with a pink cardigan, a bow in your hair and the Dolores Umbridge Wand, you are the scariest character in the whole series. No mask required. More Harry Potter wands are here with us.

Wednesday Addams costume: braids, black and a very serious look

For a Wednesday costume you need three things: two braids, something black with a white collar and a look that could curdle milk. Smiling is strictly forbidden.

3. Wednesday at Nevermore Academy. Over the black dress or jumper goes the Nevermore Academy Scarf, and for outside the Nevermore Academy Beanie. If you like it cosier, take the Solitude Suits Me Hooded Cardigan. With a hand waving out of your jacket pocket, you even have Thing with you. And if you are off to the Rave'N ball at Nevermore, go for the Mommy's Monster Crop Sweater with its big puff sleeves.

Fantasy costume with a cloak: ranger, Viking and witch

A good cloak is the most versatile costume piece in the world. It turns jeans and boots into a character from Middle-earth, from the North or from any fantasy novel you like.

4. Ranger of the North. The green hooded cloak with embroidery over brown or dark green clothes is all you need for a ranger fresh in from Bree. Pull the hood down low and sit mysteriously in a corner, like a certain Strider at the Prancing Pony. Talking is optional.

5. Viking look with a wolf. The Viking Cloak with Wolf Embroidery or a Birka coat, a leather belt from the wardrobe, braided hair. A drinking horn for the party, the warm wool for the way home.

6. Glinda instead of a witch. Witches get taken quickly at Halloween. Glinda from Wicked, not so much. A pink dress with as much tulle as possible, glitter on your face and the Glinda Wand. And you are the most popular person in the room. At least, that is what Glinda says about herself.

The laziest costume of the year and one that is genuinely scary

7. Stormtrooper at the office. White shirt, dark trousers and the Stormtrooper Helmet Tie. That is not a costume, that is an attitude. If anyone asks what you are, say “a stormtrooper on his day off” and aim just past the punch bowl.

And for everyone who does want a real scare: the Living Dead Queen Costume is complete, you just need some dark eyeshadow under your eyes. No fandom needed, but a lot of impact.

Halloween party tonight: last-minute snacks and games

If you are not just going but hosting, the same rule applies: little effort, big effect.

The fastest Halloween snack is mummy sausages. Cut a roll of puff pastry into thin strips, wrap them criss-cross around frankfurters and leave a gap at the top. Bake at 200 degrees Celsius for about 15 minutes, then add two dots of mustard as eyes. A bowl of pumpkin soup goes well next to them, the recipe is in my Nightmare Before Christmas article.

For the mood, all you need is a game everyone gets straight away: in “Who am I?”, everyone gets a note with a fandom character stuck to their forehead and has to work out who they are with yes-or-no questions. At a costume party you can flip it: everyone guesses who the others are supposed to be. The stormtrooper is guaranteed to lose.

If you would rather wind down on the sofa afterwards, you will find the right ideas in my article on a cozy horror Halloween night.

Frequently asked questions about Halloween costumes

How do I make a Halloween costume at the last minute?

Pick a character people recognise from a single piece, like a robe, a cloak, a scarf or a wand. Put the rest together from things you already own, especially in the right colours.

What is an easy Halloween costume for adults?

Especially easy are Wednesday Addams, the Hogwarts school uniform or a cloak like something from Middle-earth. All three work with everyday clothes in black, green or brown plus one costume piece.

What does a Wednesday Addams costume look like?

Typical are two braids, a black dress or top with a white collar and dark shoes. A Nevermore Academy scarf or beanie makes the costume even clearer.

Which Hogwarts robe goes with which house?

Each house has its colours: Gryffindor wears red and gold, Slytherin green and silver, Ravenclaw blue and bronze in the books or blue and silver in the films, Hufflepuff yellow and black. Robe, tie and scarf should ideally match the same house.

And now: cloak on, pack your wand

Buy one piece, claim the rest. That is all a good costume needs. And if anyone asks whether you made it yourself: of course. This afternoon.

Everything for your big entrance tonight is in our Spooky Merch.
